Just Because…

Another semester, more excuses.

I have been out of the blogosphere for a couple of months. This semester feels as though it is infinity more busy than any of the others that I have had. Most of my classes make me brain feel like mush. I am counting the days until it is over (17 more class days!) I realized recently that while I have been out of the loop, I have missed a couple of milestones! My 2 year blogoversary was on October 13th! My 23rd birthday was on Monday, and I even found my first gray hair ( I cried when Chris pulled it out).  I haven’t lost complete interest in blogging, I have just lost the time to do it.

I am around! I am still cooking! These days, you can find most of my eats on Chris’s blog, Poormet (Poor-mey). He has really created an awesome blog, I hope you guys check it out! Sometimes you can even spot me in the background, acting as the hot sauce pourer or whoopie pie stacker. One thing is for sure, I am eating all of his wonderful food.  After the craziness of this semester I am hoping to create some sort of blogging schedule, so please be patient with me!

Prepping your garden for Hurricane Irene

I have spent my entire life living on the East Coast, upstate NY is generally pretty hidden from most natural disasters (blizzards don’t count!). Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Tsunami’s and Earthquakes sometimes make slight disturbances in my life, but that usually just means an extra day of rain or an aftershock.  So, you can imagine my shock when I heard that we have a hurricane headed our way with the possibility to make some real damage! I don’t live near the coast, but as of today there should be substantial winds and over ten inches of rain on Sunday. I am not worried about my safety, but am worried about what may happen outdoors. I live in a wooded area and am nervous about giant trees smashing into my house! One of the other things I am worried about is the safety of my families garden (is that sad?). Anyway, late August for us means that almost all of the veggies are almost ready!

This year we planted lots of different herbs, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, yellow squash & butternut squash.

I have done a bit of research on how to protect your garden from heavy winds and substantial rain. Sadly, there isn’t a whole lot you can do. Because we don’t really know exactly what will happen, you have to prepare the best that you can and assess the damage later. Here I will list some of the more helpful hints that I have found.

  1. Make sure that nothing can lift off of the ground. That means: put away all chairs, bird-feeders, birdhouses, barbaques, wind chimes, etc in a garage or shed where they won’t fly away.
  2. Pick any produce that may be close to being mature.
  3. Cut back any herbs and attempt to preserve them.
  4. Hope for the best!
There are also things that can be done once the storm is over.
  1. Survey the damage. Remove any debris from the garden and pickup any produce that may have fallen off during the storm.
  2. Check for exposed roots & replenish nutrients. Heavy rains will have diminished any stored nutrients that the plants have been storing, spray the plants with any natural fertilizer that you have.
My baby butternut squash is my pride and joy! I hope he survives!

How are you preparing for the Hurricane??

Saranac Lake Adventures

Living in Upstate NY, there are lots of different beautiful areas to go when you want to be in the great outdoors. Chris’s parents love to spend time camping on Saranac Lake during the warmer months, and recently Chris and I had the opportunity to help them set up camp. Chris and I have had really horrible luck camping. We attempted to go with them to camp on an island two years ago and ended up forgetting our tent and sleeping bags (how do you do that??). It also thunderstormed pretty much the entire time that we were there. I am all for a good storm, but when you are on an island with your dog pouting in a puddle under a picnic table, things could be a little better. We figured that going and helping set up camp for the day would be a little better. Well, now I think that we are just bad omens! Not only did we almost lose a tire on the boat trailer, but it poured the entire time we were trying to set up! I tried to take pictures, but had to put my camera away when it got sloppy outside.

Saranac Lake is very close to Lake Placid, which has been the home of the Olympic Games twice over the past 100 years. Lots of athletes travel here to train for sporting events and iron man competitions.

The first part of our trip went well. The ride was going as smooth and we were getting really close to the lake. That was until Chris said “Um..does that look like smoke coming from the tire??” immediately I could smell burning rubber and called Chris’s mom (who was driving the car towing the boat) and had her pull over. It turns out that there was a piece of metal that was wedged into the tire, burning a deep ridge into the rubber. Everything ended up working out fine, but it was a close call!

Kelly & I waiting to be rescued!

Once we decided that the tire would be fine, we continued on and eventually made it to the lake. We emptied the car and packed up the boat for our journey to the camping spot.

Saranac Lake is a gorgeous place. If you live in the area, I recommend that you check it out! If you like camping (and I don’t scare you after reading this post) I think you might be interested. Not only can you camp on a normal campsite, but if you have a boat or kayak you can camp on one of the islands that are on the lake! It is really a cool experience. You have your own private island!

But, I must warn you! Be prepared to get soaked!

Pity Party

….
bad day.
Today at school, during a break from my classes I got a call from my mom. She was calling to tell me to call someone at work. Not just anyone, but my boss’s boss. Not someone you EVER want a message from. Right away I knew what it was. Layoff. I work directly with schools, therefore we are in the same situation that thousands of public (&private) schools are going through. There have been cuts, layoffs, etc.
So today, my call came.
I have been “Bumped”
Someone in a position that has seniority over me has been canned. That gives them the right to bump whomever has the same position title (typist) as them until the get a new job. Just dandy.
So here I am, sitting in the library of my university sobbing on
the phone with a man that I never speak too. Isn’t that great?
My job isn’t over quite yet. There is always the chance that this person won’t want to take my job. I am only making 300 something dollars every two weeks anyway. Who would want that after working full-time? And there is always the chance that whoever this bumper is, that they don’t live around here. My job works with education, and there are several different buildings that are within a range of where I live. I’m hoping that my job is safe! That I get another phone call telling me that everything will be okay, and that that first phone call was just a prank (..a very very horrible prank)
I don’t think that I would care this much, people get laid off. It happens! I just didn’t want it to happen to me. I really really like my job. I enjoy what I do and looked forward to working there until the day came where I had my masters and could get my bosses job.
Oh yeah, and the fact that this shit show happened during my finals week was lovely.

Meet my newest friends!

Okay, So. For my FINAL class as an art history major I have to do a 15 page paper and a 15 minute presentation. I am fine with the paper, but the idea of presenting my research for 15 minutes has been causing night sweats and other traumatizing issues over the course of the semester. I have two weeks until my presentation day and have FINALLY figured out what my topic is.
 Are you excited?
Meet my soon to be good friendsAntoine-Laurent Lavoisier and His Wife Marie-Anne-Pierrette Paulze

Jacques-Louis David, 1788

He was a well known French scientist and she illustrated his findings.
My research will entail figuring out what EVERY object in the double portrait is and why, as well as what they  are wearing and what that meant in Revolutionary France.
Isn’t that exciting??
