Library Loot

Every once and while I find myself on the computer with two windows open. The first being Amazon, and the second being my library. What I do is look up books that I would like to read, look at reviews and then decide if they would be worth checking out. I then request them from the library and pick them up whenever they are in. It is a pretty good system. If I realllly like a book I can renew it, or if I really really really like it I can go buy it. Right now I have an overwhelming amount of books out of the library! School starts in less than a week and I am still hoping to get through most of them.

My first set of books is a collection of Memoirs & Stories. These are my favorite genre of book.  I am almost done reading Life Is So Good by George Dawson. I have been slowly working my way through this incredible story. I highly recommend checking out the Amazon review and reading it.

I am excited to read The Pioneer Woman‘s love story, Black Heels to Tractor Wheels – A Love Story. I haven’t had time to read it yet- but it looks promising! When I first got this out of the library, the library clerk smiled and started laughing- she just loved the title! I thought that was adorable.

My last book I have to read in this category is The Dirty Life: On Farming, Food, and Love. I requested this one on a whim. I generally really enjoy books like these. They are my niche!  This book tells the tale of a couple that lived in NYC and moved to Upstate NY to start a farm. From the reviews I can see that the couple eventually produced a cooperative on the CSA model, in which members were able to buy a fully rounded diet

My next genre of books is for overall fitness. I am looking to get some new tips and learn more about weight lifting and running.

Kara Goucher’s Running for Women: From First Steps to Marathons &  The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess have you read either of these? I am anxious to see what I learn from them!

My last set of books are basically cookbooks. They contain little stories that go along with them, but for the most part they are awesome recipes that I can’t wait to try.

The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country GirlHow to Be a Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking and  The Recipe Club: A Tale of Food and Friendship

Told through letters and recipes, this novel traces the pair’s loving, competitive friendship from 1963, when the girls first meet, to the present. A look at the difficulties of sustaining childhood bonds, it’s also a satisfying meditation on how nourishment for the body can replenish the soul.

–People Magazine review of The Recipe Club: A Tale of Food and Friendship

I basically read cookbooks as if they are novels, so I am always excited when a new one is ready for me at the library!  Not only are they quick reads, but usually there is one or two things that you learn from them that sticks with you forever.

What are you reading right now? How do you choose what books to read?

Review of July Goals

In the beginning of July, I posted a list of goals for myself for the month. Lets see how I did!

Exercise:

  • Run at least 3 times a week. No excuses! (Beginning of the month failure)
  • Run the 4  mile battlefield loop
  • Strive to run farther distances, just have fun!
  • Begin a weight training regimen
In the beginning of the month I slacked with my exercise goals. I have gotten better though- last week alone I ran more than I have since the beginning of June! I ran a total of 16 miles last week. My highest number ever! On top of that, I have also began a weight training regimen at the gym, doing other cardio on off running days, as well as taking Bud for walks. I haven’t ran the 4 mile battlefield loop yet- the idea of running and then driving home in this recent heat doesn’t sound like fun. One of the best things about running around my neighborhood is the fact that I almost always dive in the pool to cool off when I am done!

Eating:

  • Don’t over indulge (as much)
  • Stick to eating clean, healthy foods (I always feel better when I do!)
  • Go to the farmers market more often (FAIL) I haven’t been once! I always get sidetracked or forget.
Not counting vacation, I would say that I have cut back on indulgent foods. I try to stick to what my body is craving.

Reading:

  • Finish the Harry Potter series
  • Read The Help
  • and all of the other books that your heart desires.
Finishing the last Harry Potter book took longer than expected. I don’t know if it was the fact that I was busy with other things, or that I was reading it slowly and didn’t want it to end. Oh well, it is finished now. They are such great books! I started reading The Help right after finishing Harry Potter, but realized that my library books were going to be due soon, so I started reading them. I just finished Laurie Colwins book, Home Cooking: A writer in the kitchen and am almost done with Confections of a Closet Master Baker.  After I finish that, The Help with begin!

Blogging:

  • Be a better blogger!
  • Keep posts relevant and exciting
This is something that I have been working on. I ordered business cards for the Healthy Living Summit, but haven’t been cooking as much as I would like. There is something about being near and oven when it is 85+ out that makes it seem less enticing…These goals are constant. They haven’t ended now that July is over. I will continue to be a better blogger and hope that my readers feel that I keep things exciting!

Here is an embarrassingly short list of my cooking adventures from July-

Country Fest?

This weekend I had quite the experience!

I am not one that generally listens to country music, but this Saturday I somehow found myself at country fest. Chris’s cousin turned 17 on July 4th, she is a fan of country music and was given tickets to go. None of her friends were able to make it on short notice, so I went with her, her mom and Brenda (Chris’s mom)! It was one crazy ride. You can see some really crazy people at events like these! I swear, I felt over dressed in a tank top and shorts! Who knew that bikini tops and unbuttoned shorts was go-to attire? Attendance soared over 60,000 people, We arrived at around 1:30 and then stood in line to get in (with tickets) for about another hour.

This was us at the end of the line- it goes allll the way up and then over to the left.

I had a couple saving graces of this experience- I brought Harry with me!!I completed about 25% of the 6th book while listening to some tunes and people watching! Not bad for a Saturday!

I also indulged in some fried dough. I may still have powdered sugar on my face.

In the end it was a pretty awesome Saturday. I got to spend some time with some of my favorite people (Brenda, Cheryl & Tori!) and did some pretty serious people watching. I don’t know if I will volunteer to go to country fest again, but it was quite the experience!

Sorry for the blurry pictures, all I had with me was my cellphone!

Summer Reading

Last summer I went through an incredible faze in what I was reading. I found that every book that I got out of the library was foodie related.. basically memoirs with recipes thrown in. These were amazing reads! They included lots of fantastic recipes and other information that has stuck with me. Now that my free time has grown, I just picked up two more yummy summer reads!

The books that I picked up are Confections of a Closet Master Baker — who also has a fantastic blog!

(Did I mention that she is Sandra Bullocks sister?)

My second book is Home Cooking: A writer in the kitchen

I can’t wait to review these! Until then- I recommend checking out:

A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes from My Kitchen Table by Molly Wizenburg.

(she also has a blog!)

This book was one of my favorites- it was a very quick read. It related stories from Molly’s life to life experiences that she had. I made many of the recipes in this book, including these…and this.

But first… I need to finish reading these bad boys. I have read them all, repeatedly. But want to finish reading them all again before the movie comes out next week. That might make me crazy. I am SO close to finishing the fifth book (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) and then have the last two. I have a feeling I won’t be doing much else until next Thursday at midnight!

What are you reading this summer??

For The Love of Food

I have been reading away diligently attempting to make a dent in the 50 books that I promised myself that I would read over the next 1001 days, and have noticed a trend in the books that I choose. The books that I tend to favor have been memoirs that focus mainly on what people eat. I have found that food is used as a tool. Everyone  eats, so usually it is what bonds people from wherever they’re from.
Lets call it the Cuisine Connection. (gasp)

I saw the Cuisine Connection in Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia, and in Lunch in Paris: A Love Story, with Recipes. These memoirs focus (if only in sections) on how food brings people together in love and can sometimes heal the deepest wounds brought on by life.
Two other books that I have read are The Butcher and the Vegetarian: One Woman’s Romp Through a World of Men, Meat, and Moral Crisis and Julia Child’s memoir, My Life in France. These hungry women are searching for something. In the Butcher and the Vegetarian, Tara is searching for the perfect balance in her diet. Growing up a vegetarian she has a hard time with the idea of eating meat, the book is very informational. A lot of the information she uses comes from Michael Pollan’s book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma. The Omnivore’s Dilemma is a book that I desperately want to read. I have had it sitting by my bed for weeks. Every time that I pick it up to read it I get nervous. After watching Food, Inc., I have been hesitant about eating meat at all, you could say that I am going through my own ethical and moral food dilemma! Tara has some wonderful information and has made be a strong believer in buying local and spending the extra cash on organic meat. For every extra dollar you spend on it, you know they had a much better life.
All of these book have been excellent. I highly recommend them all!
