We were all blog newbies at some point, and I truly think that every blogger can always use a refresher! During our panel we discussed a range of things, but I tried to bring up things that were really important to me.
Things I wish I knew earlier:
It is okay to blog around your own schedule. Taking weekends off? Alright! Going on a mini hiatus for a summer vacation? Sure! Your blog is your space. You have the freedom to create a schedule that works for you. I have had this problem every semester. I attempt to blog often and then my blog gets pushed aside whenever homework piles up. This year I am really going to work on a functional schedule that works for me. Using windows live writer (for PC users) has already become an amazing way to get blog posts done quickly and easily for future dates (I am using it right now!)
Don’t let your friends and family beat you down. When you first tell others about your new endeavor, some of them may think it is funny and laugh about it. That hurts! I can tell you from experience that it stops. People get over it and usually end up being very excited and supportive of you and your website. They may even join you and create their own! (Ahemm, I see you Chris!)
Be your self. Blog from your perspective. Don’t feel the need to post about things that don’t interest you! Your readers follow you because they like your insights on certain things. If you have stated in previous posts how much you hate cilantro (like me..), don’t go making a new salsa recipe that is chock full of it!
Sometimes it takes a while to find your blogging voice. The more that you write and the easier it will become.
Finding a local blogging community:
I created my first blog in October 2009 without even realizing that there was a thing as a healthy living blog. At the time I posted about articles I found interesting, pictures that were funny and recipes that look good. It was until a year later that I saw a former coworker (and newbie blogger) posting about a CDNY blogger meet up. I was shocked! I googled my little fingers away trying to figure out what this meet up was! Who were these people? How come I wasn’t invited? I finally found a few of the blogs of the people in attendance. They were like me! They lived locally and some of them even went to the university that I attended. Soon after reading about the meet up I left a comment on a blog and soon that became an invitation to lunch in-between classes. Soon this lunch date became a weekly thing. That fall I had the amazing opportunity to meet ALL of the awesome bloggers in my area at a breakfast and corn maze adventure and later that year, an epic cookie exchange party. I can honestly say that some of the ladies that I have meet blogging at my best friends. Since my experience with finding bloggers in my area, it has become MUCH easier! Enter: Healthy Living Blogs! Healthy Living Blogs is run by my CDNY friend Heather.
